Mountainsmith Tour Lumbar Pack
A must for field herping that involves any kind of hiking, the Mountainsmith Tour Lumbar pack offers plenty of space, comfort, and is extremely well thought out.
The large pocket is amply large enough to carry a first aid kit, spare socks, field guide, rain poncho, and even a meal for the longer treks. The smaller pocket in front of it is great for things like snack bars and small batteries.
The zippers have large pull tabs that are easy to operate with gloves on in cooler weather, such as weather that is optimal for many species of salamanders.
It features two mesh side pockets that are easily reachable while wearing the lumbar pack. I keep a water bottle in one and a digital camera in the other.
It also features a couple loops that can be used to attach additional gear like a GPS device, I can even reach the GPS and put it back without needing to remove the lumbar pack.
Furthermore, it has two straps on the bottom that can be used for attaching additional gear, such as a monopod.
Since the lumbar pack sits on your waste, your shoulders are free for a digital SLR backpack when you want to take really high quality photographs.
The lumbar pad is well padded making it very comfortable, and features pull adjustment straps making it easy to adjust the balance of the pack.
As an added bonus, it is made out of recycled plastic water bottles.
