Common Kingsnake
Lampropeltis getula
Description
Distribution Range
General range map taken from CWHR.
Museum records taken from following institutions: CAS Herps, MVZ Herps, LSUMZ Herps.
Typical Elevation
We do not yet have enough records from distinct localities to calculate typical elevation. We need 9 more distinct localities.
Taxonomy
The subspecies that occurs in our area is the California Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula californiae).
Taxonomic Etymology
Taxonomy Notes
A recent academic paper has proposed a split of this species. Under that proposed split, our population would become Lampropeltis californiae without any subspecies present. However, there is a lot of controversy and evidence to suggest the species split is not valid. I do not personally expect to see the split adopted by respected taxonomy lists, wildlife agencies, or field guide publications.
