The subspecies that occurs in our area is the Western Yellow-bellied Racer (Coluber constrictor mormon).

Notice the yellow belly that gives the species its name. This specimen was difficult to capture, but once caught, it played dead, even refusing to remove when released for several minutes. Tamarack Road, Shasta County, CA
