Shasta Co. Field Herpetological Resource Site
Purpose
We are a fledgling Citizen Science organization focusing on herpetological fauna of Shasta County. Our aims:
- Provide accurate detailed information with high resolution photos of the Reptiles and Amphibians that can be found in the wild in Shasta County. Species accounts is still a work in progress, see the account for Ensatina for an example.
- Provide identification keys that can be used to distinguish similar species from each other in the field. This is mostly done, but some photos are lacking.
- Keep a running database of field reports with voucher photographs documenting what hobbyists have found within Shasta County.
- Promotion of habitat and ecological conservation.
- Educational non collection small group field herping expeditions in Shasta County. This is currently being facilitated through Northern California Outdoor Adventurers, a Shasta County meetup.com group.
We currently have 436 records in our user contributed database covering 24 species with 942 images, and we are growing.
Additionally, we have 2369 records from various vertebrate museums used to help generate range maps and typical elevation for species in Shasta County.
Please note that this is not a government site and is not associated with Shasta County Government.
